Teeth cleanings are performed by our dental hygienists and is a procedure that is about 30 minutes to an hour. This procedure keeps your gums and teeth clean. Having patients understand what happens during a teeth cleaning procedure helps them have a stress-free experience.
- Hygienists use a small mirror to check the patient’s mouth for any signs of problems. These problems can be inflamed gums, plaque, tartar buildup, and/or dark spots in teeth. If cavities or gum disease is found, the dentist is usually informed.
- Using a scaler (a small, hooked tool), the hygienist removes plaque and tartar from the surface of the teeth, near the gum line and between the teeth. Depending on the patient’s buildup, a manual scaler or an ultrasonic scaler is used.
- Hygienists then polish the teeth and remove any stains using an electric handheld tool with a special toothpaste called prophylaxis paste. After this step, hygienists floss the patient’s teeth to remove any remaining plaque and paste.
- Fluoride is applied in some cases. This gel is placed inside a mouthpiece that is worn for approximately a minute. Fluoride supports healthy tooth enamel and fights the bacteria that harm teeth and gums.
While getting teeth cleaned, it can be uncomfortable for patients due to issues like gum disease or tooth decay. Regular brushing and flossing can help prevent buildup and make cleanings less painful, as well as, getting cleanings done twice a year.
